The San Francisco 49ers won their second game of the season on September 25th by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 13-8. This has really boosted 49ers tickets sales as they start off the season 2-0. The 49ers, which are now 4-1 and are considered one of the surprise teams in the NFL. Their hot start under head coach Jim Harbaugh, actually came as a surprise because the team struggled against one of the worst teams in the NFL – the Bengals.
Starting the game very poorly, the 49ers were shut out of the first two quarters, finding themselves in a 3-0 deficit heading into halftime. San Francisco, which has a history of offensive struggles, found a rhythm late in the game when it scored ten points within a three minute span. Down 6-3, the 49ers drove 72 yards in just ten plays to get the go-ahead touchdown. Kendall Hunter run in the go-ahead touchdown from seven yards out. On the Benglas next possession, the 49ers intercepted young quarterback Andy Dalton deep in Cincinatti’s own territory. The 49ers were unable to do much on the drive, but long-time kicker David Akers connected from 53 yards to give the 49ers a touchdown lead. Much maligned quarter Alex Smith finished the contest with an efficient line. He completed 20 of 30 passes, which is a completion percentage of 66 percent and considered above average, and for over 200 yards without throwing an interception.
The 49ers had just one turnover in the game, which was key as they forced three Bengal turnovers, giving them a positive turnover margin — a key in determining a close games. The offense was keyed by tight-end Vernon Davis, who caught eight passes for 100 yards, which is considered a very high mark for receivers. the 49ers struggled to start any type of ground game, as star running back Frank Gore averaged less than three yards per carry. The 49ers could only generate 50 yards total on the ground, and that was with 29 overall carries.
The 49er defense, which is considered a strength of the team and one of the best units in the NFL, held the Bengals to a total of 228 yards and no touchdowns. Both Reggie Smith and Carlos Rogers had interceptions, and the 49ers were able to generate a consistent pass rush and contain a rather middling Bengals offense. Andy Dalton finished the game with a quarterback rating below 50, which is considered very bad, and completed just over 50 percent of his passes for under 200 yards. The 49ers were stout in their run defense as well, holding the Bengals star running back Cedric Benson to less than four yards per carry. The also kept explosive rookie A.J. Green in check, holding home to 28 yards on four receptions. The Bengals appeared to miss quarterback Carson Plamer, who is holding out and has threatened retirement. The 49ers have since gone to put up impressive wins throughout the year, including a 48-3 shellacking over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, previously considered an up and coming team in the NFC. The 49ers biggest test of the year may come against the Detroit Lions. The 49ers were quite fortunate against the Bengals, however. Lets hope that the next game will be a different story.
